Sure but the aftermarket ones that are mounted on an alloy block with no pinion support are a little different. I reckon 99% of those simply have a new alloy block swapped on without much thought to position.

They might be different, but for an engine with an 11" clutch (like a 400 or 454 or a truck) you'd have to have a different bolt pattern to fit many block as many only have the two staggered holes. That or drill and tap the block.

So on the Holden V8 setup with the 11" Clutch, they keep the same ring gear and the flywheel has an odd/larger shape as you go further away from the engine block.

On the factory 11" clutch GM vehicles, they actually change the amount of teeth on the ring gear, and the starter motor?

Yes. It's been that way since forever. The externally balanced GM engines like 400 and 454 only had 11" clutch/flexplate (168 tooth with external balance) but the others varied between 153 and 168 teeth depending upon what the engine was used in. HK-HT 307 and GTS327 were all 153 teeth flexplate & 12.75" flywheel with 10.5" clutch for example but GTS350 used an 11" clutch on the 14" flywheel so had the larger flywheel and bellhousing. As far as I am aware HT-HG 350 auto & HQ had 168 tooth flexplates or flywheels.

So I bought the Aeroflow (AF4250-5310), cos there are few other options for this bellhousing (Mal Wood TKK). Maybe I should have gone the Dellow... I have had good and bad luck with Aeroflow stuff in the past and Heah's experience worries me, but hey, I can't hillstart it everywhere. Maybe I will buy two and keep it in the car.

I was alarmed to see the pinion gear sticks well through the mounting block, like my issue with the ProFlow starter earlier in the thread, however you can see they at least drilled the mounting block offset to allow for the correct starter to flywheel distance. I'd rather use the Bosch pictured here, but can't. Same style at least. So, it fits. Kinda.

As Heath found, the solenoid is too close to the exhaust as stock, and while you can clock the solenoid away from the exhaust (as pictured top), the housing then hits on the engine block. You can see the Bosch above has clearance there, as it was actually made to fit, unlike these others. I am loathe to machine anything off the block for clearance (plus I don't have a die grinder or Heath's skills), so wondering if there is a way I can modify the housing instead. It's the area in red below that fouls, as well as the fitting bolt (which Heath countersunk, but the housing still fouls). Thinking not, without jeopardising the operation of it - any suggestions? If not, anyone got a die grinder for sale..? Ha ha.

Will see if it can be clocked completely upsidedown, but thinking not (Sump).

Are these just a frigged with SBC/BBC unit?

Could you buy one of the US based ones like in the links below at rotate the unit? It says they are clockable and surely it would be easier to modify the "clockability" and also weld or machine the mounting face to get it to work? Basically what Heath did but these have more clearance where it hit the block.

The last link shows the clearance and how it fits on a BBC plus dimensions, there is an image in there about the clockable face and you can see the adjustment holes to do this. It is only alloy and easy to modify.

Yes could certainly do that, but same same, they all need modifying, including what I have. Be nice just to bolt something on. Ha ha.

It'd have to be less work that stuffing around with the solenoid and the block? Point was you could rotate it like Heath did but the way the flywheel end of the solenoid is tapered it'd have heaps more clearance.

Yes, it's a good idea, but then I'd need to space back the pinion gear, too, which was the same problem I had with the original starter. I've invested in the Aeroflow now, will see how I go. Thanks mate.

Sounds like another good reason to use a SBC/BBC! Things not fitting right is one of my pet hates.
