I was wondering why the right rear brake shoes had fallen to bits on the EK. After much carefull scrutineering and being aided by clues from the FB EK forum i figured out that I had a different rim on that corner.

Clay, can you update this thread with my photos as I still can't comment on that forum. http://www.fbekholde...&hilit=rim drum

If you read all six pages on the FB EK forum you can see there has been plenty of confusion on what fits what.  My EK still has the original drums with the raised knobs, which don't fit into the corresponding holes on the odd rim.  I was assuming this rim was from a HR, until I read that the hubcap mounting face is further out on these, and mine doesn't appear to be like this. So maybe it is EH?

Odd rim. You can see it is full of brake dust where the drum has been distorted and forced the shoes to go crooked. You can also see that the indents on the hub face are a different shape to the EK rim.

You can see Laurie one is riveted and the other probably spot welded. That might be a clue as to the origins?

Check for a date stamp on the wheel. It will be in the middle of the wheel well. The tyre needs to be off the rim to see it, though. I have what I believe is an HR wheel here, but a tyre is on it, so I can't check the date stamp. This wheel doesn't have rivets, so I would suggest it's older than that.

The spot welded rim has a small hole drilled in the centre section meaning that its a disc brake rim with a different offset for HD

or HR.

Almost right.

The odd rim is HR passenger rim, fitted to all HR sedans and wagons from factory. All HD got wider front drums, requiring the compatible wheel centres. This resulted in te hub cap mounting sitting further out prolly about 3/8". Balljoint front suspension was introduced mid run, then slightly revised geometry for HR, including widening track on the passenger models by slightly decreasing positive offset from not much to even less. These rims with the different offset were not require to clear the option disc brake calipers, as popularly believed, as the HD also had the disc option. The HR commercials continued with the HD rims. Both suit the discs, contrary to popular belief. Real nerd stuff this. What is important is having the same offset both sides of course.

That rim will distort your drum as you have discovered Laurie, causing it to tend to lock on the shoes.

Anybody want to swap a HR rim for an FB/EK one?  The spare was EK so at least it is still on the road.

FE to EH are all the same centre and track, though best to check. The earlier FC etc have the larger valve hole. Some are spotted to rim while it may have been the commercials that were riveted.

The HR rim will also fit EJ EH and Toranas, though offset is different from factory. Talk to Blacky, can forward his number if you like.

Yeh Geoff Black, blacky Holden. The originals are getting harder to find in useful condition but still plenty on old trailers if you know what you are looking for.
