This is a Brookfield sump from a Torana.  I don't have any picks of the inside.

There must be some substantial baffling inside that sump judging by all the bolts!

You can see how many spot welds were used with the L34 sump here Andrew.

The sump not only featured the windage tray, but also two lengths of angle down the sides, which I presume was to stop any oil above the tray from climbing up the sides.

There was also a crank scraper.

Thanks for the photos. That Brookfield sump doesn't look like Tim's one. Weird. It also looks kind of deep but not so high in capacity, to my eyes.

Also, I think we need to clarify nomenclature. I though the crank scraper was the steel angle device that stuck into the reciprocating assembly's area and 'scraped' the oil from it
From my recent research, some of them look quite detailed, like this:

My sump has this bit of angle (driver's side only):

I cut mine back into four segments to clear the larger 4-bolt caps my motor is fitted with, and I was thinking maybe I could extend that so that it hugged the reciprocating assembly better, as well.

I don't know what that belly pan hanging off the main caps is called, to me it looks like another windage tray? And I am surprised it is not louvred.

I was thinking about this, when you trimmed down the bottom of the sump, did you recheck the clearance of the pickup to the bottom? Did you make the clearance too tight?

Well I would have thought if that created any issues, they would be at high rpm (high oil demand) rather than high lateral forces, what do you think?
It has little "feet" on the pickup so that it can't properly obscure its mouth against the floor of the sump

When I set it up, I did measure that it was close to the floor, with some clearance, I cannot remember the figure. It would have been something Shannon advised me on I expect.

Only good for anticlockwise tracks?

The internal ridge to stop oil climbing out of the pan is also commonly seen at the back on drag racing pans.

Heath, the pan under the crank is a "Windage tray", some are louvered, some not, the item you have is a "crank scraper", the angled items fixed to the sides of the sump can also be referred to as a "crank scraper", I run both types to assist with oil being pushed up the inside of the block.

Heath - the aussiev8 forums are definitely still active, but just much quieter these days. There's a lot of rich history there to search. If you do post something, just be a little patient to wait for a few eyeballs to see it and respond..

I just did a super quick and dirty search to see if I can find anything.... here's one post where they were talking about building circuit-oriented 308s...

Interestingly, engine oil weight is quite a consideration. What oil are you using?

One of the first things I found, quoting TK383:

"...on the oiling system, if you stick with std stroke you don't need priority mains oiling, but you do need a good sump (ASR circuit race pan), good pickup, modifed oil pump, modified oil galleries, edge oriface lifters, modified drainbacks & the engine needs to be set up to run a relatively thin oil that drains back fast."

9 pages here.... I haven't been further than page 1...

Thanks Brett. That first page was really the main one that touched on the oiling system.

Hmmmm... I wish my motor was apart, and I could weld shit into it now. But pulling it out is a job for... not today. Haha

Well the car is up on the hoist and I'm starting to plan this out. There just isn't that much space to get the starter motor in and out! I can make a winged sump that's extra wide at the bottom, but I don't exactly know how much volume it'll give me yet.

I haven't pulled the motor out yet, so far just working on some CardboardWorks. I don't think I am going to try an external pick-up at this stage. Most keen for external drain-backs, an extra point of crank-case breathing, some more baffling effort and greater sump capacity.

External pickup & drain backs always cool mod to have for track work.

Struggler's roll pins in pushrod was great idea at restricting oil to top...old heads would also close up lifter holes & drill to smaller size.

Another trick some engine builder like was bungs on intake manifold was suppose to be better at crankcase ventilation than rocker covers because most escape routes were trapped in by pushrods or oil pooled inside rocker cover.

So basically 2 breather lines from intake, one off each rocker cover & some liked to add extra one from f/pump block off all going to large 5ltr catch as high up in engine bay as possible.

Even vacupan setup might be fun to try...may need restrictor so it doesnt suck too much oil in although heard can put vacuum guauge in line to work out restricter sizes.

All old info that used to be on forums that havesadly disappeared.

I just popped into the Forum to answer a PM and saw this thread.

I'm flat out right now but will try to find some time later to give you a few nuggets !

In the meantime, I'm not sure if there are any pics of my old Group C pan in the "Cinderella Story" thread, might be worth a look ?

Back soon.....

Welcome back Andrew, certainly keen to hear your feedback on this topic when you get a sec.

I couldn't find any photos present in that thread any more unfortunately.
