It means a few laps of Chapel St and a couple up and down Lygon with the doof doof going full on in the boot so the parcel shelf is leaping up and down and distorting the music anyway.

I think he means doing figure of 8s like they reccomend with new diff centres?

May be wrong though, he may have been calling for Chap laps!

Ha ha good stuff Heath. That tool you made for gripping the pinion yoke while you undo/do it up is a grouse idea. Ill definitely make one of those cos it sure beats swearing at something that otherwise keeps turning. Ah actually last time I did that the diff centre was out so I just held the yoke in the vice while I think Brad kind of held up the diff centre. Yeah, I'm a dickhead! Seriously, nice job. It should go well at Heathcote.

Well it all went in today, things always seem to go smoothly and predictably when you have access to a hoist hehehee. Photos aren't the best sorry

I was very disappointed to find that the car had CS axles, so now I have six course spline axles that I have no use for, and no spares for this car at all! PM me if you have some fine spline LX/UC axles you want to get rid of and I'll pay a reasonable price.

The 3.36:1 gearing has woken the car up heaps, it's just a much better street car now (my calculations were incorrect, turned out it had a 2.78 rear end when I thought it was 3.08). The highway cruise revs are kinda high but I don't do a lot of that sort of driving, so it doesn't bother me too much. And yeah the diff is working beautifully - doesn't make any sounds, feels great on & off power and in the transition between the two. Just loves being slammed through the gears, it's like a built auto now, don't need to kinda ride the clutch in to take up the backlash etc, just constant drive when you're feeling enthusiastic :)

Ohh yeah and I dropped the tailpipe for the drag day as well, so now the car is a bit louder (particularly inside the car, which is where it needed more volume), and with any volume increase, there comes a phony power increase, which is always good lol. I just need to go and get a turn-down made up during the week.

Whoever thought you could have so much fun with a greasy old unopened 202? I will be cutting shithouse times next weekend but I will be having the time of my life if nothing breaks :D

Great stuff Heath! Some well weathered mechanics won't touch diffs.

One question though?
I hope you tightened the control arm bolts after the weight was back on them, not while it was still on the hoist?

I gave them a final tighten when car had weight on it, but I didn't leave them super loose when it was up on the hoist. Perhaps I should have left them a bit looser - I'm assuming that's so that the crush tubes can rotate when the control arms change angles so that the rubber is not being twisted? Anyway I will remember that for next time.

Yes, it will shorten the life of your old rubbers.

Nah it will be fine, especially if Heath's attention to detail on the internals is as good as the outside, looks great!

Here are a few better quality pictures, draw your own conclusions from Heath's facial expressions (particularly when filling the diff oil)

Mmmm the oil filling photos are very flattering.

BTW the pedal hardened up fine after the final brake adjustment Ross, it was perfect on the way home so I think I'll leave it like that :)

Looking mint Heath! Top job. Good to hear the ratio change is noticeable too... always nice to feel the difference after a big job like this one.

Have fun at the drag day, I hope you run some good times and have a blast.

Are you bringing the beast to the weighbridge day on Saturday to see what she weighs?

My 1st car was a 6 cylinder HQ.
The combination of a heavy car, wide tyres and CS axles wasn't a good recipe.
I broke a few diffs and a few axles in that car.
I've always found Torana's to be easier on axles than the HQ, but still vulnerable.

Hope nobody breaks an axle or diff next weekend.

Great tip for saving face (pun intended).....leave the oil container in the hot sun for a few hours before pumping it in.

It's funny how we all pull that face doing that job with cold oil!

Nice job on the diff Heath, it looks mint, and I'm sure the effort you put into it will pay off with long service from it. I have been told you do a few figure 8's gently when you build a new diff to "run it in", so to speak. You could also cut some lazy laps of your favorite place to cut laps.

Speaking of cutting laps, i was up in Albury on Saturday night in the mighty boy, cutting laps. Been a long time since i've cut laps in any car i own, was good fun. So go cut some laps dude!

Cheers

Are you going to lap it in?

What it really means is applying lapping paste on the contact surfaces of the teeth of the crownwheel and pinion and rotating the pinion with a load on the crownwheel. Laps the contact surfaces to stop any gear noise.

Usually done on a miss matched crownwheel and pinion and/or fitting a matched set to a different housing.

Not so much on a pair that have lived their lives happily together in the same housing in the past.

Figure 8's would be more to do with getting oil over to the axle bearings after a diff change, though 4 laps one way, then 5 laps the other way would give the oil more time to travel. The extra lap to give time for the oil to change sides.

I found out what the 'lapping' was all about in some conversation a few days after that post. The other thing with doing figure 8 is to exercise your LSD if you have one.

You bringing spares Brad? As long as someone has some then we're set. No point in everyone bringing spares.

Baron, cheers for the advice.

Top effort.

When I changed from 2.78 to a 3.36 behind an old 186,I used less fuel as well as the car being more responsive.
