Without getting too serious - I thought I'd compile a list of my 'Top 10' Torana's. This isn't about the prettiest show-car, nor the fastest race car, nor the car that's worth the most. This is more about cars that have personality, cars that influenced me growing up, and cars that are just outright cool for their own reasons. I've mulled over this for the past couple of weeks, and changed my mind several times, but finally landed on my 10.

 

Let's put this lense on it - if you could grab 10 Torana's from our rich history to park up in your dream garage, which ones would they be? It's not actually an easy task....

 

Here's mine to kick off. Let me know what you think.

 

In absolutely no particular order:

 

1. Blown, HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw twin throttle powered BEAST.... rewind to 1998 and damn this was a top build, well thought out and so refined... I still love it today....

3. Toranasauras drag car. I used to love seeing this one at Calder Park. A lot of personality for what's essentially a pretty plain white build. Can't remember what times it used to run, but it was always a standout....

7. "TUFF73" LJ - I used to spend lots of time hanging around with Vic locals Alan and Leanne.... something always grabbed me about this colour and stance.... and it was such a consistent low 10 second car at the race track...

10. Lucky last - Greg Angus' 468 cube big block hatchback. 700HP aspirated + 400HP of bottled goodness. If you haven't seen this car - please do yourself a favour and watch the below video too. You need to see and hear this thing cruising the street. Glenn's commentary is worth it alone.... his best quote describing the drive: "The world is about to erupt when you open the throttle on this car”.....

Any particular reason you picked the '78 car for number 8? Most rave about the '79 car but I agree with you, the '78 was the first LX to win at Bathurst and also Jim Richards first win. That '78 car also did a faster Top Ten Shootout lap than the '79 car (also the first year for the Top Ten Shootout) although the '79 car was slightly quicker during the race.

To be honest - no reason at all. I'd happily have either the '78 or '79 car in my collection, but having read those facts you've called out - I tend to agree that perhaps the '78 car is a little more interesting. It was the pioneer car and had to work harder to establish itself as a race winner (stealing the title back from Allan Moffat and Ford who won in '77). The top 10 shootout lap time is interesting too, I wasn't aware of that. The '79 car did it easier and set records of course, but I'm happy to call the '78 car the true hero!

Phil Rilotta driving blown red lc coupe on the streets...then seeing it few years later early doorslammer(?) days with Victor Bray,Gatt Bros etc.

 

Thunder,black A9X,Litre8 are mandatory.

 

COME drag car both 2 & 4 doors.Mark Hayes LC4540

 

Doesn't even get to mad 90's street cars that used cruise & race around Sydney.

 

Depends on what era you grew up in will influence the cars on your own list.

These are some of my favorite from decades ago…these are Summernats 1995. We drove over from Perth in my SS Monaro, was about a dozen of us from WA that year including 2 street machine covered Falcons, Shane Wynds tunnel rammed XW was graphiced by then. 
 

Punk pink Torry had the biggest tyres I had ever seen… not fussed on the boot latch though.

and my best mates A9X… RIP Dave, was a Manjimup car, from memory he was the 3rd owner. He had it until about 6 or 7 years ago and passed waaaayyyy too soon 4 years ago next month 😢.  I was one of the few he ever let drive it…including for his wedding.  When he sold it, had around 100,000kms on it…90% original paint and very clean and original otherwise.  We cut the bonnet and put the scoop on and painted it black. For some reason the bonnet was plain chamois when he bought it. So for sentimental reasons, after my own Torana, Dave’s A9X will always be my favourite.

Yeah old mate Heath was tentatively in my Top 10, only omitted late in the piece as this became more of a nostalgic Top 10 - exactly as Adam said. Heath's will organically take a place here once it ages a bit more :)

Do you know one car I really should have included too - Quentin's wild plum LH. I became mates with Q back in the late 90s and he welcomed me into the Torana and car club world like no one else - with endless advice, support, spanner time and non-stop cruising - whether that was day or late into the night. What a massive influence. I loaned him a tandem trailer to pick this car up when he first purchased the shell. Then watched it go from 253/Supra 5 speed, to 350 SBC/TH350, back again, then later on to an animal 383 SBC.... and then of course it evolved into the much slower! twin turbo LS that it is today.

 

This was one of our wedding cars - so yep I think I'll have to evict someone from my Top 10 and shuffle it in!

As a 1990 model myself, I'm going to mix it up with 5 cars I grew up ONLY looking at old photos of, and 5 from the post-2004 era (cars that were current when I was in my teenage years and above). Some of them are because of top-quality fabrication, tech, and packaging, some of them are because of flashy stylistic choices of an era I like, and some are just cars that I have had great exposure to, that could be exchanged for other Toranas if I associated with different people in a different area - but that doesn't change their significance to me.

 

THUNDER with its sunroof, alloy rollcage, colour-matched Chev badge and wheel centres. Faded old magazine photos of this adorned my dreams.

LITRE8 with its alloy rollcage, colour-matched Compomotives, wild brakes, suspension, mammoth rat motor with all of the throttles and blue & red fittings, NOS hard lines, dry sump, chassis mods, etc.

I finally saw this car in real life in my late 20's and it was a good hero to meet.

 

Mark Sanders' LH Torana, I love the pastel colour choice, the use of the colour everywhere, the set back and low slung motor, low slung seats, and the focus on weight reduction, and willingness to just essentially build huge parts of the car from scratch. We'll try and look past the panel gaps... they are astonishinly bad, haha.

COPBAIT for me was just front and centre. The rude use of colour and clean-ness, although I would proudly put it on a pedestal, it isn't the car I actually want to own. It's very show-focused, particularly in the later incarnation with no wipers and HVAC. But it's certainly a poster child for the era, which I really love.

This ridiculous historic sports sedan, just because of how crazy the body mods are. I would LOVE to build a Torana with box flares at some point... maybe even on my own hatch in the future.

And now in the modern era... when I was at my MOST impressionable, I went in Glenn's awesome Ultra Blue A9X sedan. This car is why my car has 8 butterflies, a Holden V8, and the colour it has.

I do kind of regret not adding the side pipe to mine (it exits on the LHS, so not pictured lol).

 

I had to pleasure of heading to Toranafest half way through my hatch build and spent some time around a group of Sydney-based really traditional A9X street car style hatchback Toranas that really charged up my motivation, there's a few fellas who are mates who own about 5 or so cars in this style, and I'm going to group them together here and say they're a bit of a pack that are all great. They pretty much all have droptanks, 4-speeds, hot Holden V8 donks, alloy cages, super wide Simmons with 345 Pirellis on the rear, headlight covers, Recaro LX seats, etc.

Clarke Hopkins' NZV8 series Torana... and really that extends to a group of these cuzzies' beautiful race cars over there that are styled similarly and engineered beautifully.

John Szwede's awesome hatchback which has been transformed from a bit of a showy cruiser car to a tough street car & targa tarmac rally beast in his time of ownership. Sweet interior with classic houndstooth-insert fixed back Recaros  It has yucky LS power, but in his defence it came with that motor already, and he at least installed ITB's and had the motor built with heaps of poke. Anyway, great looking and very high performance street car.

And even though I shouldn't because Brett dogged me on this one, I'm going to put LXCHEV in as my last entry. Brett was a bit like that cool older kid as he was a few years ahead and had built his awesome smallblock-powered LX and was enjoying golden times with it, during the period that I was an impressionable teenager. I loved all the old build photos, the story, the pop-up sunroof and roof aerial, the trading post video of it hooning around the industrial estate... fark. I kind of preferred it on the Hotwires actually and would never forgive the transmission choice, but this was always a COOOOOOOOOOL local car that I regularly saw and it inspired the hell out of me. And the first time I felt a holeshot with E/T Street tyres was in this car and that is hard to forget.

I feel a bit one-eyed having only included LH/LX Toranas and they are virtually all flared, but I guess my taste is concentrated in this area. I actually love loads of other Torana stuff as well but this is where I feel it the strongest.

I love that white A9X Heath. I came close to buying a white A9X hatchback in the 90's. $12k. It got stolen not long after I viewed it and found a few weeks later painted green wearing Sunbird tags.

It had a slightly damaged quarter where the owner clipped the Armco on the Pacific Highway south of Swansea. I even grabbed a NOS quarter for $200 for it which I hung onto until very recently. I ended up not buying it as it would have been my daily driver and these things got stolen so often back then it wasn't funny. My 6cyl LX hatchback got pinched twice and I caught blokes trying a 3rd time in the same era.
