Hi all, apologies if this has been covered before but I have searched and have ended up just confusing myself (not hard to do  ).  I have an LX SS hatch 253 4 speed.  I purchased a reconditioned gearbox in 2014 and the vehicle has only been driven about 5000km since then.  Unfortunately I decided to run the Hatch around Lakeside for a charity fundraiser and got a little bit carried away.  I ended up shredding the cluster gear and third gear.  Upon stripping the gearbox which I thought was an M21, I have discovered that it has an M20 cluster (496 stamped on it).  It does have the correct length input shaft but it appears to have been a 6 cylinder shaft that has been extended to suit the V8 as you can see the welding joint.  I have managed to pick up another box which I though was an M20 that I could use for parts.  Upon stripping this box I have discovered that it has a cluster gear with 899 stamped on it which I'm assuming is an M20 XU1 gearbox with a short 6 cylinder input shaft.  My lengthened input shaft will therefore not fit the XU1 box.

Q. Can someone please give me some advice on which V8 input shaft would be compatible with the 899 cluster gear?

Q. Would anyone have one available for sale?

Thank you for your help.

The input shaft part number from the XU1 M20 box should be 2823544. You need the input shaft from an M21 V8 box to match up with the XU1 899 cluster. I don't have the part number for the M21 input shaft at hand. Hopefully someone else will know.

As above, just get an M21 input shaft. You should be able to buy one of these new, it will work with the 899 XU1 cluster. That 899 is also compatible with the rest of your busted M20 apart from the input shaft.
The other thing you could do is buy a new M20 (3.05 1st) cluster and use it with your input shaft (I doubt it’s welded though, just a standard V8 M20 input shaft). All the rest of either box will work with a V8 M20 input and M20 cluster.
Before you buy anything check out the parts in both boxes first to see what is good to use.
