So after playing silly buggers one afternoon, I have blown the diff in the Clubbie.  I haven't opened it up yet, but it has no drive and lots of noise so I would say it is terminal.

I was looking for a second hand unit when I came across Holmart's website advertising new ones for all models. It looks to me that the LSA powered GTS has what looks like a cast iron housing instead of the aluminium one on the lesser cars. Now given that this car cops a bit of a hiding, is it worth the extra 35% cost, and does it even bolt straight in???

Complete VF V8 rear cradles can be had quite cheaply.  I bought one for $800 to put aside for spares. Complete front end out of the same car (VF2 SSV) cost me $500.

Yep, If you have a late model Commodore, use it, and plan on keeping it now is the time to be raiding the wrecking yards and stocking up on spare parts to keep it running and looking good.

Parts are never gunna be in better condition, cheaper or more plentiful than they are now.

Ve's are almost old at wreckers now, hard to find parts for anything vt to vz that's good nowadays.

I saw a near complete VE under a pile of Asian junk heading to the scrap yard last week. All I could see missing was the wheels and I guess its engine and box were removed. Complete trim was in it by the looks, all doors and all lights. Diff was still there. Looked undamaged other than the damage from the forklift and the cars on its roof. Reminded me of all the VB-VL I used to see going to scrap the same way in the early 90's.

So VF SS and VF Clubsport (both manual) are the same part number?  Has anybody used a Trutrack or similar aftermarket internals? I won't be going the 9 inch route.

Yeh, getting hard to find decent trim for VE's or anything low klms these days - I meant VF and even ZB: don't know that they will be hung onto and collectible, but the AWD's not a bad thing and pretty rare on the ground even from new. If anyone's hanging onto one of them they would want to have good stash of their own spares.

Hey shiney, the iron housing diff, requires a different subframe, my understanding it’s hard to get. I have read people have modified there subrframes to fit the iron housing but I don’t know what’s involved.
They also run an oil cooler setup in them. Would be able to block it off, to not function.
I have messed with truetrac a in ve’s. The best one to use is the harrop version, they have some extra trickery inside them, to help function better.
Warning harrop can be pains to deal with. For most these will be fine.

Have used KAAZ lsd’s. Don’t recommend their track version for the street, it’s tighter than normal version, can feel like driving with a spool at car park speeds.

Word of warning, If the gears require replacing in the diff, the aftermarket motive sets are a little noisey, can whine a bit.

From memory the LSA powered HSVs supposedly used a modified version of the Camaro rear cradle. Likely thin on the ground and drug dealer pricing.

I don't know the specifics of that particular setup but sometimes the returning oil is directed at something (normally a bearing at the front of the trans or diff housing) for additional lubrication, and blocking off the oil cooler system altogether would stop it doing that.

Also, it's unlikely with a diff but, if the pump that circulates oil through the cooler is internal then you'd need to make a bypass tube (from the OUT to the IN) instead of blocking it off completely.

I am just curious as to how you managed to blow up a diff centre in a VF. Thought they would have been built to take a good thrashing.

They have a heat exchange matrix inside the diff housing.
The factory auto cars with those diffs, used the auto oil, pumped to the diff, through the matrix, at some point to the front of car, through the auto trans cooler.
I dont know how the manual cars were setup but there is a different front cover with a mechanical pump that bolts to the front of the 6 speed gearboxes available, im assuming they used a variation of this.

I would have thought so too, although it is a highish horsepower car and I use it the way god intended.  I've blown a 9 inch to bits in a Torana as well in the past, so it's no orphan.

I'm also a little disappointed with the LSD in my VF Redline, so am definitely interested in how the Harrop internals go.
