anyone got some hot tips on getting hotwire mags sparkling without the use of a toothbrush, autosol is good but hard work for neglected mags

if autosol isnt up to the job you may have to conciter paying to have them professionally polished if the damage is too much.

yeah there pricks to clean got a set for torrie and a set on monaro, either get some one else to do it or use some aluminium cleaner stuff panel beater used it on my jelly beans mags and they came up a treat.

you could acid clean them with a acid based wheel cleaner prior to using the autosol.
Autosol is the right stuff for these wheels but try to keep it of the black bits as it sometimes leaves white stains.

Liberal lashings of elbow grease. Guy has just spent 20 hours a wheel on alloy Commodore rims getting them all smooth and shiny from cast alloy.

yea, those black bits are the problem, if you go crazy with the acid or any other high ph product you'll have a fun time painting all those inserts black again, my mate had the same problem with sprintmasters, no big deal repainting them. but h/w'rs are a different story

Had these on my first rana. I found baby bottle brush, and smaller teet brush (think that's what they are, smaller version of bottle brush though) and mag cleaner worked well for an initial pass, specially the finer holes near the centre.

To mask up for painting, just put masking tape over the spokes, and lightly tap with a ball peen hammer (like making your own gaskets in the old days) and polish em with paint. Make sure you cover up all the bits you don't want to paint. Black is notorious for getting on everything within 15m.

Yeah, i've been there and back polishing hotwires... Elbow grease is the key mate... i spent 4hrs on 1 wheel.... Came up the treat.

Why would you need to tap the spokes with a hammer, what does it do?
Polish with paint?

I'm in the process of getting a quote to clean up my hotwires, and was thinking of having a go myself, I just don't understand what you mean.

If you are keen I would pay some one to do it. Should be around $125 per rim but they come out like new.

Go and buy a bottle of Purple polish from a truck stop. No more
scrubbing hard its easy.
cost about $26.00

jeez, nice job on those sprinters slr5640, ive got about 5 sets of them under the house that are looking just like that, never would have thought they could come up that well.
also, keith ive seen that purple stuff at work, great gear for drop tanks might be a good option, thanks mate

I was shown a blttle of it by keith1962, It's actually CALLED Purple and its in a white bottle with a yellow/blackish label.

The polish itself was a purple colour!

It sold for around $26 a bottle ( from hat i rmeber of keith's bottle) and was bought at a truck service station!
No idea who makes it though...

Keith was good enough to polish up half of a part on one of the canberra torana club cars and it was pretty damn amazing stuff!

Another brand is "Mothers".

Red pot with a white lid.

Works real well on simmons wheels.

Not a cutting compound as such, more a de-oxidiser.

No real elbow grease required as the rubbing is not what makes it work.

HOLY SHIT!!
I got a bottle of Purple today...did section on a hotwire next to the 15 mins section I spent on the same rim...its brilliant!! Brighter than the Autosol section with 10% of the effort! :clap:
