Hi Peter, don't over think it, Satin Black is the correct colour/finish IMO.

Did GTR and XU1 get a gloss engine bay like GTS and Brougham? Or were they slops like the other lesser Holdens.

HK-HT had a mixture depending upon the BAP and VAP. Often the firewall got slops and satin on the subframe but I’ve also seen slops on the subframe over the years but never really took note of the plants of origin. But GTS and Brougham were off the gun gloss Warrigal Black, I think that stopped at some stage though like in HG.

Are they satin or off the gun gloss acrylic like a GTS which looks like satin as it’s not cut and buffed?

The paint always looked like Satin to me. Was a long way from any form of gloss.

IMHO if it looks like Satin, then it's Satin.

It eventually oxidises like any acrylic does. Off the gun gloss acrylic looks like satin at the shinier end of satin. I always thought that GTS were satin as well until I saw the assembly instruction docs for HK and had a closer look at the original engine bay of my GTS327 and you can see where protected it is still gloss but has lost a lot of its shine. I'll see if I can put up a photo I took when it was still complete back in the early 90's.
