For those that haven’t been up close to one of these, this is how much front tyre they have steering at 540kmh at the end of 1000feet of racing.

So much for shortening the race distance slowing them down.
And for those that dont know, the current word record of 3.62 seconds at 338 miles per hour is owned by Brittany Force. Who says women cant compete in elite racing?

Summernats is not a quiet event, part of its charm.
Some things are very loud, such as being on the fence at the burnouts with the big cars pinned to the floor.

This was the Top fuel car measured while standing six feet in front of its nose. Even with earplugs it was deafening standing a few meters to the back and side of the car inline with the pipes. Totally worth it though. 130+ db will rattle your brain.
Number 1 daughter had no problem getting to the front of the fence at the burnouts. I have taught her well!

Sadly Saturday was the end for us what with stupid Monday work and all.
With only a couple of hours left we caught the last Top Fuel start of the day and visited Skid Row for a bit.

It did pretty good.

And sounded magnificent doing it.
Somewhere in recent times while no one was paying much attention, the world has worked out how to make LS engines sound real good. And not just the blown burnout monster versions. Me likely.

A small follow up.
My father has a delightful lifelong habit of writing physical letters to me every couple of weeks. He likes to include clippings out of the newspapers that he thinks I might find interesting. He had always been an extremely conservative man and has become more so as he approaches his 90s.
So of course this weeks letter included many Summernats based clippings from the Canberra times and his local paper from the NSW coast where he now lives. In his letter he expressed “much concern about what he had read”. He has never been to the event despite living locally for many years.
The articles and letters to the editor had much the same content as they do most years after the Nats but the one below is a gem.

An unfortunate episode of domestic violence involving two men with an apparent long history of similar events in their relationship.
A not uncommon event in society but this was no barrier to Summernats inclusion in the headline and a further three times in the article! Without the opportunity to smear the Summernats I doubt this event would have been considered newsworthy.
For those that are forming their views on the Nats from the media this is the bias you are exposed to.
Below is the 98% reality check.

Do I need to start looking for Accom. now?, or is Canberra big enough to swallow all the visitors?
