I am assuming I am late to the party here, but for those who haven't seen it, a SA mob is set to make a modern LX hatch from scratch. Modern chassis and drive train, old style panels.

I love the passion and dedication. But I feel the sweet spot would have been an XA or HK coupe followed by an LH/LX hatch or HQ coupe. In any case would be great to see it happen.

Sounds like it’s easier for old mate to use a car already in his possession to copy off.

I read that. I guess the small volume he can make, and the market is so small it won't matter.

Andy has ballparked a price tag of $250,000. “I’ve priced it around that of an original hatch in good condition,” he says.

So, he's just plucked that price out of his ass, based on what a 50 year old car may be selling for at that particular point in time?

He obviously reckons they'll cost him a LOT less than that to build?

For that money you’ll buy a 1837, XU1 or A9X. But maybe the finished product might be worth it and collectable. Those remanufactured Alfa Giocattolo with Walkinshaw engines in them were a similar process and collectible today. They were near $100k new near 40 years ago. There was only 15 of them made.

At $250k there might be a couple of buyers lined up, but I don't think the line would be out the door. I know good hatch body's are getting hard to find, but for that coin you could build a very nice hatch to your own liking and still have a decent roll of money left for the kids education. I would have thought at the current market $145k would be about as much the average enthusiast would part with. $160k will still get you a bloody nice restored Torana Hatchback or you can pick up a new BMW M3, Mercedies C63, Audi's or even save heaps more and at $80k a new mustang and pocket $170k. If anyone want's a good hatch I am willing to sell mine for $250k if that's the current price for good hatches.
