Hi legends,

 

Can anyone tell me what these holes are for? There are three in each door cavity. They aren't factory I am pretty sure, and figured someone wanted to cavity wax their sills. I didn't spot them before paint so I guess plugging them with suitable grommets and sikaflex is the way to go. Or are they factory-spec speed holes for late '77 Toranas and I should just add plutonium? Hoping for the latter...

Why there and not under the kick plate?

Probably done when no one cared. The rustproofing game was a rodeo in the late 70s when it boomed..

Rustproofing my guess. They put plastic plugs in them.

Yeah, they must have been in a hurry and couldn't be bothered lifting the sill cover plates.

Yeah bugger. Shame I didn't realise before I painted it. Oh well - at least I know it worked, bugger all rust in this car. Ha ha. Thanks fellas.

I worked at a dealership in the 80s 90s as a smash repairer, we had a guy that worked at the rear of the shop doing rustproofing (end rust) all day everyday. He was always under the pump no time to take scuff plates off etc. most of the time when we got the cars back for warranty rustwork it was around where the holes were drilled. If you get stuck for plugs I may have some.

i worked at Hornsby Datsun and they had a fella called Gargoyle doing  End Rust all day 6 days a week.

I used to do rustproofing in a dealership myself but we used WaxOyl (that stuff was awesome, and a hell of a lot less messy than EndRust), but I never drilled a hole in a single car! (Although I was allowed the time to remove the odd trim panel instead.)

 

WaxOyl had a selection of wands that you could get into the drain holes that are already in most panels, plus that stuff kinda misted in through all the cavities anyway. You could squirt it into the front of a sill panel and see it coming out the drain holes at the rear.

 

I don't think we ever had a single warranty claim from the rustproofing.

 

When we first started doing it, I did a test by applying it to half of a piece of bare mild steel, I probably still have that bit of steel somewhere (although I don't know where), but even a decade later the half that got rustproofed still looked brand spanking!

It would b e interesting to try and find a current day equivalent. Sounds pretty good.
