My LX has a paint code 568-15953 that we all know is Mandarin Red however there is yellow under it and all over the floors and in the sills etc.

Does any one know if bodgy paint jobs on the production line might have been resprayed and in a different colour?

It's doing my head in.

Is it red lead under that yellow? It’s a 4cyl tagged car isn’t it? What is the paint combination code on the body ID tag - 4 digit code on the trim line?

Yep red lead, paint code is what I said above 568-15953 trim code1890-60A

Whoha,,, just read this from this site, 'Also note that it should be a 1976 LX as Mandarin Red was replaced by Flamenco Red and Madeira Red (which looks more maroon to me) from 1977 onward.'

1890 is Mandarin Red, which is what I asked. I was just checking they hadn't got the PAINT (refinish) line wrong.

Flamenco (1926) replaced Mandarin for 1978, no 1977 model year LX with Flamenco (or not many anyway). Madeira (1928) was an added colour for HZ, LX etc but was only around to July 1978.

Being a Plus 4 it can only have been Mandarin, Absinth or Jamaica from memory.

Hi if it is a plus 4 Torana it wont be hard to work out, paint tag will tell you, yel 327 is correct on the plus 4 colours, To put your mind at ease, start scratching the door pillars and other body spots only to see if  its mandarin red   The Torana should clean up well There Is nothing better than a Torana with minimum or no rust, good luck with your new project,

yel327 sorry I should have updated my findings as I think the car is actually a 3/77 Sunbird with a tag of LX8UH69. Does this add up to being a Sunbird or an 'S' model?

Sunbird if 3/77. Doesn’t really matter, The 4cyl sedan models simply became Sunbird.

There is one L34 that was reportedly resprayed in the factory.  It was a very late build (Sept) and the owner liked the new Mandarin colour rather than the Salamanca the body was painted in.  I think the car was already assembled, but they mostly took it apart again for the respray.  This is all hearsay of course.

I think you'll find it also includes Chinese Whispers! To paint a car in the body plant the whole car would need to be stripped back to nothing as they are heated in an oven, and then put back in to bake the paint as it wasn't air dry Acrylic. It was heat cured.

If it was resprayed at GMH it would have been done by an outside contractor or possibly in another area, like wherever they sprayed the front panels at Dandendong for the van and cab-chassis bodies that came from Elizabeth already painted including doors.

It also couldn't have couldn't have been done at Dandenong in the BAP as Dandenong were using HQ colours way past the start of HJ restricted production but only for Torana plus Glacier on HJ utes. GMH didn't want any HJ in HQ colours (except Dandenong utes) so changed over to the HJ colours early like August and September. All remaining HQ paint was sent to Dandenong to use on LH Torana. I believe some colours even lasted until November.
