Novice mechanic.

What’s the best way to install a rubber sump gasket to ensure no leaks on a 308 black motor?

Should I use any sealant on the gasket?

I use a little sealant in the corners, particularly if it needs something to hold it in place. Ideally install it with the engine upside down on a stand, makes it much easier to get everything clean and set it in place just right. Watch the gasket squish as you tighten the bolts.

Thanks mate, no issues with draining the oil then flipping it upside down on a stand?

No, just make sure you prime the pump before first start as it probably won't self-prime

Yeah no problem doing that way then put oil back in.

Ive put a few of those rubber gaskets completely dry & some have used brown goo to hold it in place if rubber is stretched or out of shape.

If doesn't get oil presaure on start up smear some vaso on oil pump gears just enough to seal them in

Watch Vaseline, I've had it clog the filter intake. Switched to lightweight grease after that. Make sure the cam and lifters are covered with startup goop as they need engine revs to get oil on them - won't get any whilst cranking.

Do I need to worry about cam and lifter goop if it’s a runner that’s been sitting for about 6 months?

In theory no but won't hurt to get some oil onto them whist its upside down, maybe even put some on them where you can get around the crank/rods with an oil can and turn the engine over so you can get to as many lobes as possible, and as the cam turns a bit it gets on the lobes under the lifters. It won't be like a normal startup as the sump, pickup and pump will be dry and you'll possibly want to crank it without plugs in this instance to get some oil pressure before starting. An old engine builder once told me he used to put STP engine additive on them as it was sticky, but a little engine oil would be better than nothing.
