Dear Torana friends,

I will swap the setup of my 5,5 trilple disc racing clutch with hydraulic throwout to a original Holden clutch.

Unfortunately is there a longer stroke needed for the original clutch and the stroke of my setup is not enough to free the clutch plate.

Im using a Tilton master cylinder with a 0.7 diameter.

I wonder if there is another throwout bearing on the market to compensate the longer stroke.

Or is there a pressure plate on the market that needs a short stroke only ?

Uwe

Hi Uwe,

Cannot believe you are finished with the Tilton triple clutch m8.

It must be for drag racing, and no good for the circuit, hmm?

I say, unless measuring everything up, you may need a complete new set-up.

Hope you get good news from here. :spoton:

Do you know the maximum stroke of the throwout?

If it can physically move far enough, then you may just have to change the master cylinder.

A larger diameter master cylinder equals more fluid displaced by the same stroke, but requiring greater force to achieve the same pressure. Although, I suspect that the 'standard' clutch itself will require much less force than the triple plate version, so maybe it all balances out.

If you think that the throwout bearing does not have enough stroke, then the only thing you can do is change it.

Looks like Tilton have quite a selection:

Do you know what model throwout you have now?

I got a Quartermaster 710 Series throwout with a Quatermaster 5.5" triple disc.

For the Holden clutch i did try a Southwest Speed 650-600 throwout.

The triple disc clutch is not good to use it for regular street use. Its a pain in the bum. Also when you got a Richmond T-10 gearbox with a 2.43 first gear. Its distress for all components at every traffic light until the thrust flange at the crankshaft is gone because of the high pressure in the clutch. Now i have rebuild my 253 engine to use for street use. The racing clutch is for the 355 im building.

Great information there Uwe,  :deal:

never thought about the pressure at the crank before.  :banghead:

Good to see you have plans for the triple after all. :spoton:

I have found Tilton master cylinders in a bigger bore...i guess.  I have a 0.7" as i remenber but its not at their list.

But a 1 1/8" one could solve all problems, perhaps.

Didnt know that they have more different ones.

A 3/4 or possibly a 13/16 master cylinder should work.
If you fit a master cylinder that is too big, it will make the clutch pedal hard to push.

I have now a 3/4 " Tilton master as recommended from Southwestspeed.

Unfortunately its still not enough travel....about 5mm.

7mm is the regular Holden clutchplate.

Southwestspeed said that their bearing has a max travel of 0.428" = 10,87mm

Next sizes of Tilton masters are:

13/16" , 7/8" , 1" , 1 1/8"

Which one to choose ?
