Hi guys,

Just bought 2 LJ's, one is fairly complete with the attached tags.

They come up as Chateau Mauve Metallic with 48R Trim, though I can't see alot on this? The car is very sunburnt, though it appears to have a white roof with the chrome trim near the rear window/boot?

Main thing is, it is very rusty, so I am weighing up if this is worth saving vs just parting, as it is pretty complete.

Also, I believe this has has it's original Red 138 and Auto, just wondering if this can be confirmed as well?

Thanks

Phill

From those numbers I can conform that it is a 1972 LJ 4-door 6-cyl SL, built in Adelaide

Paint is Chateau Mauve Met (all over), so the white ? roof & mouldings must have been added by the dealer.

The interior trim is Flax, which is an off-white.

Because this car has 1972 ID plates it doesn't tell us what the engine, transmission & rear axle are.

I'll look it up for you and also see if the BODY ID tag actually belongs to the other tag as it has been removed and replaced at some stage. The car may also have had a vinyl roof originally and it was removed and painted white.

I'll be able to tell you if it was a 138 auto but you'll figure out of it was an auto or not by having ADR9 on the compliance plate. Assuming the original plate is there (matches the chassis number).

Yea, it does have the 3rd tag near the window, though it is very thin and can't make out what it says :-(

82569JL201268 is an LJ SL 4dr Torana completed on the 27/04/1972.

The drivetrain is recorded as engine CB139428 (2250cc/138ci), M40 trimatic transmission, G92 2.78:1 ratio differential and drum brakes all round.

Your compliance plate is dated 7/72 which does not match with the recorded off line date of 27/04/1972 for the VIN stamped into the skinny tag.

Body number 1730 A is consistent with July 1972 manufacture.

Do you know what the chassis number is stamped into the left hand inner skirt?

Thanks Dave.

Currently at work mate, though will have a look this arv.

Though what it's looking like is this one will be stripped and parted.

Bit of a shame, though is what it is.

I don't think that the body ID plate belongs to that car. The rivets are not original & the paint doesn't look like Chateau Mauve. The roof also looks factory, but isn't on the plate.

Yea, my concern as well Dr Terry.. I think I'll just part it as it's very rusty. If it had of been a pretty rare combo I would have invested to bring it back.

Oh well...

Thanks for the time guys.

Hi Dave,

Just leaving work now, see be back in halfa.

The odd thing with this as well, it does look to have the Chateau colour in the door jams, plus it has something under the bonnet which is odd.

I'll post some photos shortly.

OK, thanks for that Phil.

Chassis number ALJ 04727A aligns perfectly with VIN 82569JL201268 and build completion date of 27/04/1972.

Without being able to clearly read the chassis number on the Compliance plate which should be somewhere in the ALJ 089xxA to ALJ 105xxA number range I will dare to say I believe the 7/72 Compliance Plate and Body ID plate with body number 1730-A do not belong on that Torana.

Almost forgot The selling dealer was code 815 - Melville Motors - Melville, WA.

That interior trim looks more like Saddle vinyl to me, not Flax. Also the rear seat backrest is from an LC SL and looks like Sandalwood vinyl.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for this, you've been a great help.

Defs wont mind parting this one out.. or just moving it on due the rust it has.

Thanks :burnout:

You're welcome.

Would you mind doing one more thing. Clean the compliance plate with some steel wool to see if the chassis number is readable.

From the pics you put up I think it is ALJ 1xxx2A

Here we go

As I suspected, that compliance plate does not belong on your SL.

Chassis number ALJ 09572A would have belonged to a PSN somewhere around L2085xx, most likely completed on or around the 18/07/1972.

Thanks Phil.
