Laurie, give me a date range for V8 Bedfords and I'll see if there is anything in my collection.

By the way, they are not mine, just something I saw that I thought someone here on this forum might be interested in.

If Laurie is talking 4.2/5.0L Bedfords it is late 70’s. When ADR27A became applicable to commercial vehicles. The 250 and 292 inline 6’s were not ADR27A compliant so low comp 350 replaced the 292 in C20/C30 and low comp 4.2/5.0 Holden V8 replaced 250/292 in Bedford E series. I think there was an old big Bedford petrol 6 as well but it might have already been gone by then.

Laurie

Press release and on sale date for the Bedford with 4.2L and 5.0L was September 3 1979. This was the debut of the XT5 design V8 engine, a few months prior to it being available in VC then WB.

Yeah, I would just like to catalogue the differing parts on the 253 and 308 in the Beddys. Things like the thermostat housing, compressor pulleys and so on.  A parts book would be great. A workshop manual would be even better.

No info but maybe in one of these manuals

They are essentially blue motors but have significant changes. Mains and big ends have different bearings, 5.0L pistons have heavier piston crowns and both 4.2 and 5.0L pistons have large dishes (to achieve 7.8:1). Camshaft is changed with a more gradual ramp. Valve stems are hard chromed and valve heads are carbon steel tipped. Double row timing chains. Starte motor, alternator and water pump are heavier duty. Engines have a larger flywheel to suit a 12" truck clutch. Sump is increased to 5L (from 4L), radiator is larger than on a passenger car. Fitted with the XT5 HEI ignition. Electronic governor set to 3800rpm. Carbys on both are essentially the same Rochester Dualjet carby as fitted to a HK/HT 307 just with the ADR27A spec emissions as fitted to US vehicles.

SAE net:

4.2L - 126hp@3800rpm, 208lb/ft@2400rpm.

5.0L - 145hp@3600rpm, 240lb/ft@2600rpm.

Doesn't look like it is listed there. TK is the model.

Was the water pump any different externally, or was it the retained bearings similar to L34?

It had a cast iron housing.

I thought they were the larger bearing type like they had up until the end of the 5.0L in VS.
