Hi all

I'll shortly be doing a disc brake conversion on my 6 cyl LC using a Hoppers Stoppers kit - I know I need new stub axles but do I also need new steering arms?

I've seen some advertised on ebay as being suitable for disc brakes which made me wonder if they're different to the steering arms on a drum brake set-up.

Cheers

Grant

G/day Grant. Yes LC LJ 6cyl disc brakes use a different stub axle to drum brakes. That said Some of those aftermarket disc conversions use the drum brake stub axle and a conversion mounting bracket for the caliper.

Thanks Dave.  Unlike the CRS adaptor kit that retains the drum stub axle, the HS kit requires disc stub axles so I've already got those sorted.  Can I still use my existing steering arms from the drum set-up though or is a different 'disc specific' steering arm required?

Steering arms are the same for disc and drum brakes.

Awesome, thanks for confirming Dave

While I've got you Dave, would you happen to know the standard offset for a 13" LC/LJ rim?  I plan to fit 15 x 6 rims to the front with a minus 12 offset and running 185/55R15 tyres (same OD as the current 175/70R13 tyres).  The Hoppers disc brake kit adds about 16mm to the offset which now has me worrying about clearance to the guards

Hi Grant,
I’m away at the moment but my rims were +25 offset on 7inch rims…I think… I know if I try 8’s I’ll need to go to the maximum offset I can get from Neale Wheels (where mine came from) which is +28. From the table below I think you’ll need to run more like a +25 or +38. Depending on the Hoppers kit, they push the wheels out a fair bit and from memory (others will say for certain, stock Torry rims were +19 or about 4.00inch backspace. Oh, and I went commodore stud pattern on my Hoppers kit thinking I’d have more wheel options, which I think was dumb…stick to big Holden/Ford, or standard Torry. Most wheels you’ll probably want can be had in blanks and drilled to suit with offsets to suit within reason.

Thanks very much Adam, that's very helpful.  I'm dead-set on the Street Pro (007) Autodrags so will stick with the Torana stud pattern, but may now need to consider the 15 x 4 fronts rather than 6".

Cheers, G.

I'll leave the wheel backspace/offset stuff in Adam's capable hands.

Standard LJ 4.5" wheel is 1.33" offset. That is a positive offset of about 33.8mm. Gives a backspace of about 4.08" if my calcs are right.

GTR and XU1 5.5" wheel is 1.13". Positive offset of about 28.7mm. Should be a backspace of about 4.38".

The imperial figures will probably be rounded though, 1.13" is more than likely 1 1/8" aka 1.125". 1.33" will probably be 1 1/3".

Cheers Adam, appreciate the info.  I put those offset figures into  willtheyfit.com  and it seems as if I will need to scale back the rim size to 4", especially with the vehicle lowered.
