Good morning brains trust. Just wondering if anyone can help me with the following please:

Are LC and LJ steering columns the same length and dimensions?

Does the plate that mounts to firewall go interior or engine bay side?

I think there is a spring that sits on top of upper bearing that is help in place with a circlip, is there a second spring on top of that to give steering wheel tension against this to prevent coming loose.

The thin perforated locking nut to keeping steering wheel nut secured, does it simply go with side tabs facing towards you or facing down, how does this work and how do you remove?

Would anyone know the length of LJ (or LC if the same) steering shaft?

Sorry for all the Q's which may also seem obvious, but i have two workshop manuals with comprehensive diagrams but don't really answer these.

Thank you kindly in advance: Paul

The floor plate mounts inside the firewall.

There's only one spring at the upper bearing.

The lock nut is installed with the open side to the driver.

I don't have the length of the column, but do a search, I remember it being answered previously.

Thank you so much Warren, i really do appreciate that, just to clarify the floor plate is on interior of vehicle, not engine bay? Will see if i can find measurement on this forum, Thanks again paul

Mystery solved i think (hope). Was always having issues with steering wheel coming loose and wanted to do something about it. Picked up what i thought was a second hand steering column yesterday but appears to be HQ or similar and steering shaft is 920mm long. (My LJ steering wheel fits) took my steering column out this morning and after taking shaft out to measure it, it appears to have collapsed (innertube slides in and out of outer tube) this would explain why i was never about to get enough steering shaft to produce up column to get enough thread on locking nut for steering wheel. My question now is do i need another steering shaft, or simply try and establish where shaft should be and go from there. Is it a safety issue now that it has collapsed. Are the two plastic pin holes in shaft for keeping both tubes intact, until a collision, whereby the collapsible steering column comes into play. Is there any way to restore mine back safely? in my very brief research on this forum this morning (before i realised what had happened) i think i read to locate the two corresponding holes and place a small nail or wire through them. Does inner tube come completely out from outer tube, then i could mark where should be, or is it designed to always remain inside out tube? Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated, paul.

Yes, the floor plate in the cabin. Don't use wire etc. in the shaft, as it will not sheer off easy in the event of an accident, I'm sure someone repaired one on here using Delrin(plastic/nylon)pin.

i just wanted to secure to correct length as top bearing has been replaced at some stage and didnt want steering wheel to lift up. In the process of sourcing another steering shaft as thread on my one is pretty ordinary anyway. When i fit new steering shaft (which hopefully hasn't collapsed) will glue top bearing in place. I take your point though, would rather be driving with a collapsed steering shaft, than one that has been permanently secured in place (rivet, metal pin, welded!)

That’s because ADR10a didn’t come into force until January 1971. 10b was January 1973.

LC Torana steering shafts were collapsible from SOP in Sept 1969.

So were HB II & HK/HT/HG.

My gtr is oct or nov 1969 steering was collapsed only realised when doing v8 conversion.

They have silly bush at bottom bearing at top different thread for steering wheel to lj

Found it difficult to put column back together by myself inner & outer tubes to line up or slot together just kind of fluked it
