Hey all,

I have Hoppers Stoppers front brakes on my LX four door, with a modded VN V8 master/booster. My engine has a grumpy solid cam that makes little vacuum, so wanting to add a vacuum pump to the system, just for street duties. I was thinking a UP28 set up, 'cos it's small and quiet, however have had the larger Aeroflow AF49-1050 vacuum pump recommended by a trustworthy source, as the smaller VE type isn't always up to the demands of supplying vacuum.

The UP28 is easier to fit and hide, and quieter, but if it doesn't make the grade for actual vacuum, I'd rather a solid reliable pedal with the larger unit. I am worried about noise (the car is loud enough) and size is all - has anyone mounted either? Or got other options? I don't mind rumbly V8 noise, but don't like whiney electrical annoying noise.

I’ve often wondered if a alternator/pump combo off a diesel could be used for this application? This sort of thing:

Yeah, that's a good idea Yel327, I looked at that too a while ago, but forgot about it. Pajeros and the rest run them. I seem to remember some hassles with getting belt alignment right, and I don't think they are vacuum switched so just run all the time? But worth looking at again. And a lot cheaper!

Electric cars must also have a vacuum pump in lieu of engine vacuum. I have an SBC vacuum pump on my blown Chevy which will pull 20 inches of vacuum but its terribly loud, worse than a Holley fuel pump.

I don't know, but I imagine they could have a straight electrical source, i.e., the electric steering pumps. If so, it would be potentially useful to our application. Just need a big alternator to run fans, coolant, hydraulic, steer and air. Of all these, I only need air in my ute. I'm thinking about the electric setup, one day.........

I have never had a problem with the brakes on mine with a UP28 pump. For street duties it will be fine.

Plenty of them at the wreckers on all sorts of cars.

Good to hear Rexy. The heavy duty ones sound average. Thanks all.
