Hi all, I am upgrading the ignition on my stock 253 to HEI and would like to hear your opinions and experiences on the rare spares electronic distributors. They seem to be a cost effective solution along with new coil but I am unable to find exactly what brand they are or any real world reliability information.
I haven't been able to source a VC-VH or WB Bosch dizzy and unfortunately the budget doesn't stretch to an MSD.
Is there any other options I should be looking at?
Cheers

Also, if i was to buy an old original HEI dizzy from commodore or WB what is the approximate cost to have one reconditioned if it's required?
Thanks SLRNovice

Depending on condition, up to $450 for a 6 cyl, as a guide. That is with Performance Ignition Systems in Melbourne. By the time you add the donor price it is the same or dearer than a new one, but at least you have a genuine Bosch module etc. apparently the non Bosch modules tend to fail after a year or two. Vacuum advance units can be an issue as well. You can still purchase the Bosch modules new I believe, but I haven’t priced them.

I put a Goss HEI and coil on my HJ Premier, seems to work OK. Straight bolt in but you cannot put it in a HT-HJ V8 with the vacuum canister in the same location the points dizzy goes as the module box hits, you have to rotate it so the leads end up a bit messy. Original Bosch one will be the same though. Certainly a lot cheaper than finding a used one and rebuilding it, then buying a Ford rotor button, HQ cap and buying a coil to suit.

Thanks for the great info more food for thought.
By the time you spend a few hundred $$ on second hand unit and then potential cost of reconditioning you are definitely up near the price of a new good quality unit. The old saying buy once cry once keeps talking to my sensible side haha
