LC LJ Heater Diverter?

Hi There

I pulled my heater box out and pulled it apart to give it a clean and paint.

The diverter flap shown in the photo  attached is missing (the metal linkage is there).

What does it do and where can I get one? The technical name of the part would help also.

Thanks Col, there might be something there. Just need to digest it all, I think that looks like a different heater set up to mine (ie earlier LC set up). Mine is the later model LC early LJ type set up.

What book is that from may I ask?

That hot/cold air flap and partition piece are not described or listed in the workshop manual or the parts catalogues.

I suspect it was only supplied as part of a complete heater assy.

Sorry Nando, Geoff didn’t have any. But in FB, there is a group, Rusty wrecks - old (pre-84) cars truck and bikes. Mick Gee on there has a shed full of Torry bits and last I saw he had multiple heater boxes. Cheers Adam

I don’t know where Mick is.  
 

yes there there are 2 spring / drive rods you need to go wit the flaps . A long one and a short one.  There is a thread on here on heater box rebuild that shows it. I think the Marty Report also shows the spring arrangement.

Thanks Ross and Adam, your help is much appreciated.

I am getting the flap that diverts the air from one side to the other.

I was going to make up the divider panel circled red with some ply wood or fold up some light gauge sheet metal. If I understand its function correctly,  it serves to separate the air from the chamber containing the heater core to the other section.

Mick Gee is at Tudor Motors 28 Parer Rd Airport West for anyone chasing Torana bits. Got the parts I needed to a very happy boy.

Wouldnt have been possible without the help of all the legends on this site who always come up with the good oil for newbies like me.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think the flaps are sandwiched between the fop and bottom parts of the heater case. I am sure there is a dimple in the top…one flap goes through the other to pivot and the bit that goes through locates into the dimple.  otherwise, I’d agree, not a lot of load so anything should hold them in place.

I agree with Adam.  Anything should hold it - even some silicon adhesive on the top may work.  The flap, and maybe air pressure, are the only things that may provide any force but as it's sandwiched it's unlikely to go anywhere.  You'll find there are four folded tabs on the bottom panel to hold the diverter in place once all is assembled as does the flap pivot that also goes through the bottom panel.

I ended up fixing the divider to the air with two speed nuts and screws. It all came up a treat (to my eye) and fitted re fitted the heater box today. Got the core tested and the radiator bloke reckoned it was in perfect condition. Tomorrow I will try and fit the bloody ducts under the dash, the main one with the 4 bolts from the heater looks like it will be fun. How the hell I get the 2 nuts next to the steering column in whilst fitting the cable bracket God only knows. I may have to drop the column.
