hi,

I went to start my car the other day and the key won’t turn leaving the steering lock stuck on.

Is there a way to disconnect the steering lock somehow so I can start the car ?

I thought I would take off  the steering wheel and see if I could see a problem in there but I could not get the horn pad off, I found the 2 holes in the back but couldn’t feel any screws in there are they philips or flat blade

I'll never have another LJ locking column again Blair.

Why: well, one day I accidentally turned off the ignition while driving around a curved road,

and I could not get the ignition turned on again,

even turning more in the wrong direction.

What happened next, was hitting the coming car and crashing into the bank.

I would change the column to an LC type, and start up from the dash. :spoton:

Hi mate...
There must be a way of getting that pad off?. See below pics.
Also remembering the actual switch is accesable at the bottom of the column, near the floor end? as it's remotely operated by a rod from the key.
No chance the key won't turn due to the old 'steering wheel needs a yank Left and Right"?

Depends, is it the ignition barrel & key that is jammed or is it the steering lock mechanism.

I have found sometimes the ignition jams due to the steering putting pressure on the steering locking bolt. I have found it necessary to turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction whilst turning the ignition key to start the engine.

I this doesn't help then you may need to dismantle the steering column into a thousand pieces.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don’t want to chase really hard to find parts to make my car unoriginal.

Thanks for the suggestions, I spent lots of time wriggling and yanking with no luck.

I removed the entire column today and will have a better look now it’s out. I noticed that there are several large cracks on the back of the steering wheel, so looks like there has been some violence that I was not aware of so maybe that has something to do with it.

I found this card under the carpet today while I was upside down cursing.
