Hi all, I know the topic has been discussed before, but I have a question regarding moog ball joint sizing.

Info on moog website is as follows:

Greasable design includes grease fittings

  • Outer diameter: 2.310
  • Inner diameter: 2.010

A question and answer on same page is :

Q : The size of the ball joint where it enters the lower control arm , is the 2.010 diameter on the inside or the outside of the knurled part?

A : 2.310 inches would be the OD of the knurling on the ball joint.

Hole in my control arm is 1.996 inches. LX torana.

Does anyone know if the knurled part is 2.010 or 2.310, because the reply answer seems to say 2.310, which won't fit.

Regards and thanks Peter

As you may already know, some manufacturers supply them as a slight oversize, assuming there is wear  in the control arm.

Any chance your new ones are O.S. type?

I haven't purchased any yet. That's why I asked the question, because moogs are recommended a lot, and I want to make sure before I purchase any.

The ones I am replacing were the original holden ones. They were still ok, but the grease nipple and thread have been damaged .

Okey dokey.
Last ones I replaced in a track car were the O.S. variety.
Put them in the freezer, put the control arm out in the stinking hot sun. Pressed then in with a hyd. press.

This is the lower ball joint? I bought a few of these a while ago for my HJ Premier lowers. I can measure them if you like. They are not fitted yet.

Hi yel327, yes they are the lower ones. If it's not to much trouble to measure them, that would be helpful.

Moogs part number is K5103 are the ones I are looking at.

Definitely the right part number, I've previously purchased and fitted K5103 and K5108 (upper) Moog ball joints without any modifications. Big difference between 2.010 and 2.310 but perhaps that's a typo? Or maybe that refers to the max OD where the step is that is not supposed to go into the arm?

Hi 76lxhatch, that's my thinking with the supplied sizes on the website. If the knurled part is 2.010 it should go. I also think the 2.310 is the OD of the shoulder it seats against. I'm just double checking before purchasing.

Moogs info is a bit unclear with what I read on their website.

I get 2.015" Max dia. for the knurled part and 2.307" for absolute Max width of the base of the ball joint. Moog K5103.

That's great thanks John. I feel confident now that these will fit the control arms I have.
