By mid day the crowd was big.

And it was hot.

So we went and hid in the Dyno hall for a while.

Saw a very sedate looking VF make triple figures

Didn’t t even look like it was trying hard.

Conscious of time we left the relative comfort and headed to the PPG tent for the Doorslammer startup. Got there early enough to get primo position.

For the un initiated, they are started with a crank mounted portable starter. The engine is turned over until it makes oil pressure, the ignition is turned on, sauce bottle methanol is squirted into the injector hat and then the starter runs again and the noise erupts!

Its always funny watching the newbies scatter from the deafening noise and raw alcohol out of the pipes.

My sinuses have never been clearer!

Headed back to the dyno shed which has had a rebuild since last year - new ceiling, skylights and aircon amongst others. Pity the power intermittently went off…

Fortunately MPW had bought their own generator and had it running as backup for all the dyno related stuff.

We timed our return to perfection and even managed to get our primo seats back.

There had been a blue VL hanging around in the corner of the hall being “prepared” for quite some time.

And it was worth the wait.

7th car to ever crack 2000hp at Summernats.

Has run 7.3 down the quarter.

After it was parked a couple of beauties turned up including the previously mentioned orange Camaro.

The beautiful charger was a naturally aspirated mopar big block and made nearly 600 hp, only a hundred odd short of orange.

On the wander back from the doorslammer there was the second best engine bay of the day.

Together with possibly the best hatch so far.

With the afternoon rolling on and departure time nearing we headed over to the burnouts for our last taste of smoke.

Crowd along the cruise loop fully spastic by now.

Found another regular along the way.

As we arrived at the pad we realised that the burnouts can be a fun couples dress up activity.

Not sure what their safe word is….

Got lucky yet again with seats in the packed stand and saw some ripper skids.

Including a masterclass by the rotary barge.

Even had a traditional rear end barbecueue to finish our time at the Nats.

Now safely back in Melbourne after a gentle cruise down the Hume.

Freaking Awesome as usual. 5 Stars and Double Thumbs Up.

Did you happen to see what size the rims were on this Tonner?  It is getting awfully close to looking like stagecoach wheels!

Did you catch the VH Commodore with the Dodge motor on the dyno? Only made 600 odd HP from memory but was singing at 10,700.

I saw it out and about but missed the dyno runs.

It’s funny how things change. 600 hp would have won horsepower hero up to about Summernats 11.

In the early days they didn't allow forced induction big blocks on the dyno but one year they let Mark Arblaster do an exhibition run with WAR 440.

Methanol supercharged 440 big block and it took him quite of fiddling to juuuust crack 600 hp!

We are very spoilt these days with easy power.

There certainly is lots of money about if the number and standard of new cars is any guide.

Every year I find new ideas and see stuff I never imagined I would see.
