What sort of gearbox boot are people using for aussie 4 speed into LC

Do rares have a replacement that fits the cutout profile I have?

II have looked on website but - maybe domestic blindness- I dont know

On a non related topic I am relocating my battery to the boot

Is it a matter of drilling holes thru firewall with suitable grommet and running cables thru the interior of the car?

This is definitely a slow process

I used a firewall pass through fitting with swaged or soldered cable lugs bolting up either side. Actually I made a copper bus bar and bolted one end to an isolator switch, with a short cable to the starter. Alternative is to run along the sill panel with d clamps, then a pass through into the boot. I would not recommend an ordinary grommet for fear of it rubbing through and shorting the cable.

Rehashing an old thread ,but for those that are looking for a boot option for LCGTR ,Matthew hit the nail on the head .The Nissan 720 gearshift boot will do the job ,nice tight fit inside the housing ,tried it under my console with no problems.

Thanks Clay

Thanks Dave

There is also a square-ish metal retainer plate that goes over the flange of the boot to hold it to the transmission tunnel.

I can't remember off hand if Rares also do those.

Paul's retainer suits with the OPEL 4spd. It may not suit with a GMH 4spd shifter.

When the GMH 4spd was introduced into LC production in July 1971 the shifter rubber boot & retainer changed to the square boot and the floor console and vinyl boot also changed and all carried through to LJ.

Hi 1971LCGTR.

To change from an Opel 4-speed to an Aussie 4-speed, you will need

Gearbox with linkages, bellhousing etc.
Clutch pate
Tailshaft & yoke
Crossmember
Speedo cable

The console is different but you can just move the original one, slightly.

By the way, it's only a small point, but an Opel is also an M20, so it's best to refer to the newer gearbox as an 'Aussie 4-speed'.

Dr Terry.

So you could just move the retainer and rubber boot over.

Does that Rares one even sit under the console?

Not really, the retainer is shaped to suit the transmission tunnel.

The rares g/shift boot is a faithful reproduction of the OEM part and yes they do just fit under the console.

There are LCs around that have had the OPEL 4spd replaced with the GMH 4spd but still using the OPEL type console, so it seems to work however I wonder if there are any issues with movement of the shifter being inhibited that need to be sorted.

Thanks Paul - all the running gear is inplace already but I was looking for the best fit gearbox boot as I am slowly (very) starting on putting the inside of the car together. Unfortunately, I pulled the car apart 30 years plus ago but the help on this forum has been a life saver.
