Hi all,

 

One of those jobs I keep putting off properly finishing, 'cos I can't work it out, is fitting the rear seat cushion in my LX four door so someone can actually sit on it. Whenever weight is put on it, particularly the middle section, the rear of the cushion folds down, revealing the floor/boot section, rather than staying put. It seems to need an  anchor point at the rear of the cushion, rather than just the two screws at the front, to hold it securely in place - I can't see that in the manual pic below and the car was a roller when i got it, so I am not sure if there is a mounting point at the back? There is the hoop underneath the cushion section that sits on the tunnel, perhaps that needs bending out? If there isn't I will make something up, but can anyone point me in the right direction please? It just seems I am doing something simple, wrong. Not for the first time. Ha ha.

Those four top "A"s are pointing to hooks that are attached to the sheet metal. The rod shown should be part of the wireframe of the seat back and hook over them, anchoring it. Point "B"s are where a bolt (or maybe tabs?) goes through a loop (again part of the seat wireframe) that stops any movement once installed.

 

edit: I think that's what you were asking, about the back? The base just hooks in similarly; it would need to be pushed back to come out. Exposing a small gap between the base and back isn't uncommon but it shouldn't go anywhere.

Thanks mate, but it's the cushion (bit your butt goes on) I am talking about. The bit your back goes on is on nicely, but in my pic above the cushion creates that gap with some weight on it which doesn't seem right? It is mainly in the center, the sides seem okay, but yeah, just seems there shouldn't be a gap when someone sits on it, people will lose keys and phones all day long with that gap! Ha ha. Maybe it's just a "Torana thing"?

Ah, sorry. Yeah unlike say an early Commodore seat which has a foam squab these are still inner-sprung, make sure the main wire frame is solid and resting on the floor, and check for any broken springs.

 

edit: if you're not certain the back is all the way down check that too, if it's sitting a little high that will increase the gap

Great, thanks 76lxhatch. All the springs seemed okay when i trimmed them, but maybe something is up there. I will follow that lead.

It looks like it is only the two screws at the front.

I could be way off the mark here but back in the late 80s I had an LX 4 door that I bought a complete UC 4 door interior for as was in better condition. Found out the rear sear swab or base is different. Slightly different floor pan and it did exactly the same thing. I swapped the material onto the LX frame and all good.

Yeah right? Mine are the seats that came with it, so you could be onto something there. The fronts are defo LX, but maybe not the rear. I will look into it.

So I pulled the rear seat cushion out again, the lower wire frame that sits against the floor/transmission tunnel was bent into an uneven shape, which i hadn't noticed before. So I bent it back and the issue is a lot better, but still there enough to annoy me. Which is weird, because there is never anyone in the back seat. Ha ha. 

 

I reckon I will end up adding something to keep the back section high, between the two rods at the rear of the frame, but have other priorities for now. See if that works for you blackout?
