after some advice on how to repair rust in lower a pillar around the hinges? can you repair without removing the guards?

Depends how much rust there is. Most likely you will need to remove the guard/s to get to all the rust.

I managed to repair A pillar by removing welds on guard to pillar and sill panel then pivoting guard up so l could get to the pillar. Didn't have to take it off
