Very keen to hear some thoughts on this one. We currently have 5 old cars in the collection. I'm using 4 different engine oils, but wondering if I could simplify things and just run one common oil across all 5 cars? I appreciate the Torana may be slightly different, being the only "high performance" car.... but here goes:

The cars:

1. LX Torana, 383 Chev (450HP) - Castrol Edge 25/50 ("for big bore street machines")

2. EH Holden, EFI black VK 202 six (mild, lots of kms on the clock) - Castrol GTX 20/50

3. VS Berlina V6 (stock, daily driver, 200k on the clock) - Castrol Modern Engine 15/40

4. VS Exec V6 (stock, daily driver, nearly 300k on the clock, does use a little oil) - Castrol Modern Engine 15/40

5. VR Calais 304 5L (stock/mild with 230k on the clock) - Penrite HPR30 (20/60)

I'm not tied to brands, and I think a lot of people overthink oil choices and get caught up in the all the hype and need to run expensive synthetics etc. I'm more than happy with basic mineral oil. I just want to be able to walk in to any Autobarn / Supercheap / Burson etc and grab a well-priced oil. I'd happily use Castrol, Penrite, Gulf Western, whatever. Since Penrite is an Australian company, I am drawn in that direction.

It's more about the choice of oil viscosity. Since both our daily driven old-girl Commodores are now what I'd call 'high-mileage' - I'm thinking the move from a 15/40 up to either a 25/50 or 20/60 makes sense.

The EH also burns through a bit of oil these days. The Torana does too - perhaps due to larger than stock clearances.

The VR Calais (project car) is an unknown quantity as I'm yet to drive it.

Super tempted to pick some kind of 50 weight and run across all cars. Or should I just go for a thicker 60 weight and run something like Penrite HPR30 (20/60)????

I'm no oil expert but have done a reasonable amount of research as the Hemi in the Ram is known to be picky with oil.

If those cars were mine I'd just use Nulon 15W-50 semi across them all with maybe some Moly added. Or possibly their mineral 25W-60 in the EH and the VR, maybe even in the LX. The 25W-60 is a high zinc oil too for flat tappet applications.

I always used Nulon 10W-40 full synthetic in the Hilux (supercharged V6) and the RX350 Lexus, but it is finshed now, after the next two oil changes I have to look for another oil for the Lexus. They do an Apex+ 10W-40 that I can buy in 20L drums which I'll probably look at.

The bad thing about the 25W-60 is it only comes in 5L containers.

Had a similar discussion with a Castrol rep many years ago.

Bloke had rung up and needed oil for a Ferrari he had just bought and it had a specific requirement for his oil.

I looked up the tech book at the servo and told him that 20/50 would suit. But as it wasnt the specific grade he decided to wait until he could get the exact oil.

Thats when the discusssion started with the rep.

Long story short.

If the available oil is equal to or lower than the small number it will be good.

If the available oil is equal to or higher than the big number it will be good.

Going by the numbers given, 15/60 would be the target.

The recommendations take into account severe cold and severe hot.

15/40 would likely do the job.

20/50 would have been the recommended oil for most of your engines in the days they were built.

Dont overthink it. Find one of those grades and go with the discount for buying in bulk.

Cheers

Rob
