Maybe Rory could shed some light on your mysterious "XU-2". But hey if it turns out it wasn't no big deal - You still own 1 of the rarest colours of the rarest Torana. It could very well be just a typical V8 conversion done to most Torana's back in the 70's - 80's.
Walkthrough on how to post pictures.

Most likely a previous owner converted it to v8 as there are quite a few gtr's & xu1's that have had v8s put in,some restored back & some were not.

And as for the exhaust hangers... might be a genuine "mistake"?
My 6/72 strike me pink has 3 brackets for the handbrake cables.... All factory spotwelded to the factory floorpan....
So mistakes do happen!
Cheers Greg..

Have to say it's one of my pet peeves too, The V8 XU-1 was to be the XU-1 V8, not the XU-2. That option code was reserved for the LH SL/R 5000, but they chose to go with the latter.
Incidently, the Sandman Wagon was given the option code of XU-3, and many other cars had XU-(insert number). It was only the XU-1 that was named after its option code and then later the A9X. The VK Group A SS Commodore was given the option number of A9L!!!!!!!
