It would be interesting to know if any other owners of 08/72 Adelaide built XU-1,s have these markings under there passenger side kick panels ???
On Sunday the 25th of June 1972 was the day the "SUPER CAR SCARE" first began, by Friday the 30th of June 1972 Holden had offically cancelled there LJ V8 programme. Up to Friday the 30th of June 1972 Holden had completed a total of 593 LJ XU-1,s. In the month of July 1972 Holden only completed a total of 7 LJ XU-1,s (1 Brisbane, 6 Adelaide) bringing the total up to 600.
So i wonder what did happen to those LJ V8 shells ???
Im only guessing they were reverted back to 6 cylinders and sold as XU-1,s.............

came across these factory markings under the passenger side kick panel. To me they appear to spell V8........Though this is only my interpretation..........
What you are probably looking at is the signature or initials of the person who worked on it.
After the work on that section is finalised it is signed or tagged.
Or it could be the person(s) checking the work, as the car goes down the production line after each check is made the worker will sign or place a sticker to say, 'Passed'.
There may be a person at the final point ticking off all the checks.
It's known as Quality Control or QA - Quality Assurance.

Ok I may have a different opinion on this but its just a opinon ok !!!!
now from what i have read in some very old mags on the colour is=
'SMP' was an optional colour on the gtr xu1 models another weird one is 'Barneys shirt"
named after a bloke that walked into wearing a mauve shirt named barney.
from what i can see the XU2 was going to come out in the LH model
if the v8 lj's are called that now they werent back then.............
heres a pic of the proposed xu2 that never made production
xu2 ended up being the L34 option
am i right in some way ????

Hi Fly
There was only 4 Prototypes built
1-Lone o Ranger LJ XU-1
1-Strike Me PinK LJ XU-1
1-White LJ XU-1
1-Green Metallic LJ XU-1
As thats as far as we been told anyway, there is rumours they Built 2 or 3-Strike Me Pink LJ XU-1's ???????
Joe Felice Lone o Ranger LJ XU-1 was a 4/72 82911 Adelaide Built LJ XU-1,and the rest would be Adelaide Built 82911 LJ's as the GMH Adelaide Plant Fed GMH Port Melbourne there 82911 Cars, and Experimental Engineering at GMH Port Melbourne Built the V8 LJ Prototypes. And these 4-82911 Adelaide Built LJ XU-1's would be April-May 1972 Built Cars.
There was a Holden Dealer in Adelaide that Built some V8 LJ's,and GMH Port Melbourne(Head Office) knew about the Holden Dealer in Adelaide doing this and they turned a Blind eye,as the Holden Dealer in Adelaide was doing the warranty's on these cars they built.
The dealer in Adelaide i heard only Built 5-V8 LJ's,as one of them was in Street machine Magazine in 1983,its a red coloured LJ Torana 'S' 2-Door done up to XU-1 Specs, and the owner of the Red V8 LJ says in the Story that the South Australian Road Traffic Board ok 5-V8 LJ's.
One of the LJ 308s OK ed by the board was not finished for about 5 years after the OK. It was built using a new shell and all new parts.
Last time i saw the car his wife was using it as a daily. He still owns it and i drive past it reguarly in fact tonight

+1
IMHO that is someones signature, scrawl or tag whatever you want to call it. If you examine the way it has been written you will see that they were not writing V8, nothing like it!
Never seen any 'Passed' stickers or the like on a LC/LJ Torana but the signature as a check mark might be plausible.

End of story..stop trying to reinvent the wheel..it is over..kaput..get on with life..you are all speculating..and doing it very badly..
As you can see..I am over this subject....about 5 years ago actually.....and with every new Torana generation..each 5 years..the same stuff comes up....please find a new subject...if you think I am wrong...check the date this thread started...I rest my case!!!

Probably not, the 'passed' sticker is more recent, moreso to electronics and a piece of crayon would've been a lot cheaper back then.
I'd say it would probably be a check that all the welds in the area are ok.
