.... My front end was back in at this stage, so Idecided to run with it, and see how it goes... So far so good! Car drives & handles beautifully, and the desired wheel alignment setting where easily acheived, so I have no plans to change it at this point!
P.s. it's a good idea to make some spacer blocks to replace some shims... I think I made mine about 12mm thick...

Electra Blue
The suspension on the XU1 differs in that the mounting for the upper control arm is lowered on the crossmember. I dont have the actual measurement but you are probably correct in calling it an inch.
There are two sets of bolt holes which indicate that the lower one was drilled somewhere along the production line.
The 1970 service bulletin notes as important the the upper control arm is always reinstalled in the lower mounting position.
I would confidently assume that it was for handling purposes.
From what I have read this mod can be carried out on any LC/LJ Torana
but I would check on that before you pull out the old Black and Decker and start drilling a few holes.
This was disccussed sometime ago on this BB with some pretty good and informantive information. Perhaps someone with Search capabilities could locate it and post a link.

mounting the upper wishbone 1 lower will also give it a higher roll
center thus giving the car less body roll in the front.
and this i would say is the reasoning behined the revised mounting
position

Hi allThe XU1 release is in Viv Antonios book from GMH...It says 1"inch.
I don't seem to be able to find the reference to "1 inch" in the Antoniou book.
In my copy there are references to "front suspension modifications" and "relocating lower control arms" on pages 25 and 27 - but no reference to 1 inch.
Anybody?

limowhy doesn't some just measure from top down to hole centre, I can do both XU1 and GTR or stocky but not till weekend
I would be interested to know the true centre to centre measurement for the XU-1. There are a number of people one these forums who know the correct measurement but are just not saying.

And maybe the people that know don't want to say anything for the same reason imformation about the identifying markings of genuine cars is guarded?

but unfortunately the front ends are still mounted, no motors
tried about 8 different points of referrence, problems due to wheel align shims and welding pionts but the diff is not "1 inch"
variation between 15 and 20mm lower when calculated from readings between XU1 and others, so disregarded most and used 3 pts to measure
seemed most accurate and easiest to get at
variation 16.1 to 17.5 mm, hard to get vernier in and in line
will be dismantling the GTR and XU1 fronts soon so can get at the holes directly and get better measurement
I would expect the measurement to be 11/16" but could be 5/8" as someone suggested but not 1"
