Is this a 4cyl?
Just had a look at a vk commodore running a 308, but upon looking at the engine id plates the code says L16.
As far as i know L20 = 6cyl and L31/32 = v8

NB* tried searching for L16 but found nothing

Cheers people
Matt

L16 is the 186 i think? L20 is 202...

The 4 cylinders were only in VC-VH

vk also came out with eng L18 which is the 1.9ltr L4 (4cyl)
But i cant find anything on a L16.... thinking they could be dodgy tags, but they looked like they were old and hadn't been tampered with

Hi Matt.

The PO code L16 refers to the 1900 Opel 4 Cyl (LH/LX/UC) & also the 1.6 Carby 4 cyl in the early Camiras. Obviously it's neither of those, but it could be a badly stamped L18, which refers to the 1.9 4 Holden (Starfire type) 4 Cyl engine. These were used in VC & VH in Australia, but also VK in New Zealand. So it's either a New Zealand 4 Cyl VK, a totally incorrect stamping or a body plate off another car.

Hi Guys.

JBM said "L16 could be the injected 202?"

No, the PO number for the 3.3 EFI 6 cyl is LL9. One thing I didn't think of is the the option number for the carby 3.3 6 cyl is L14. Could it be L14 badly stamped ?

Nah, it was a definate L16 which was clear as (i thought this was weird it being so profound)

Was offered a VK 202 with it (complete car) but just thinking it isnt exactly ......... all legal :<_<:

I must be wrong but I always thought L16 was 4 cylinder Sunbird but I have no idea about Commodore numbers.

Am I wrong about L16 being 4cyl sunbird?

Cheers

Herne, My car was previously a sunbird and yes it was the L16 which was the opel 4 banger.
Edit: It may be possible that there is some overlap between engine codes.
I have a Uc here with the L18 tag prefix which is also in the Vk.

Hi Herne.

With Torana 1900 & Sunbirds it's L16 for the Opel motor & L18 for the Starfire 4.

The VIN engine code for the 202 EFI is "K", "L" for the carby 202 and "Y", why exactly, for the 1.9 4 cylinder.

Hi JBM.

Once again this depends on the model series concerned.

The 'Y' VIN code letter is for the Opel 1900 4 cyl used in LH/LX/UC, whereas 'N' is the VIN code letter for the Starfire 1.9 4 cyl in UC/VC/VH & export VK.

Thanks Dr T, I only had the "Y" code for a 1.9 l 4 cyl and not which one it was, you learn something new everyday!

BTW is the Opel motor used in th LH-LX-UC the same as the one used in the HB, LC, LJ and TA?
